The Freshman
Marlon Brando triumphs in his first starring role in ten years as Carmine Sabatini, a powerful New York importer. Matthew Broderick co-stars as Clark Kellogg, a naive film student who accepts a job working for Sabatini. As if trapped in a comic nightmare, Clark finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into an ingenious scam involving an endangered Komodo Dragon, Sabatini s daughter, Bert Parks and a group of very hungry eccentrics. But when the FBI asks Clark to snitch on his colorful employer, he discovers a strange loyalty to this fatherly figure.

The Freshman is a charming little gem about a Film student who, upon moving to New York, is accosted and out of neccessity is forced to find work to pay for his books and tuition. The caveat? His new employer is a Mob Boss, with "peculiar tastes".
While it didn't win any awards, it is nonetheless a fun, family film, cleverly acted with enough twists and turns to keep you entertained for it's entire duration.Stupid Bad - FilmJunkie
A really weird film about a film school student (Matthew Broderick) who gets involved with the mob due to his being robbed by the mob boss' nephew (the late great Bruno Kirby). The mob boss bears a striking resemblence to the Godfather, because the part is played by Marlon Brando. I wish I hadn;t seen this stupid movie which only works to taint the memory of the great work Brando did in Coppola's masterpiece. A silly, unnessessary movie.Serviceable "The Freshman" A Little Less Than Fresh - TheShamus
"The Freshman" is a movie which centres around a young student (played by Mathew Broderick) who ends up working for a powerful mob boss (played by Marlon Brado). Brando basically parodies his Vito Corleone from the Godfather, while Broderick provides much of the narration similar to his popular, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" role.
The movie is kind of funny ... and much of the movie relies on Broderick's reaction to being caught in the middle of a big misunderstanding. There are a few memorable parts -- such as a gag where Bert Park sings about a reptile to the music of "Miss America".
Does it hold up? The acting is good ... the script is pretty good. Is this a great comedy? While there are adult themes related to mob life, the movie is pretty clean and suitable for the teen crowd. However, it really helps to know the movies being parodied here. Without that, this may not keep your attention.
