The Godfather
Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.

Mafia movies don't interest me so it has been easy for me to ignore this film. Because zip.ca makes it easy to 'catch up' on movies I've skipped or missed, I decided to final give it a glance. It wasn't anything like what I expected after seeing plenty of farces, jokes, and hearing quotes, i.e., "Make him an offer he can't refuse." We see a priviliged family wedding and the Italian countryside circa 1946. We witness matter-of-fact style interactions between investigators and organized crime. Yes, this film is so much richer than the cliches it has spawned. One of the greatest - DisposableHero
First off, I can't believe that I am 28 years old and this is the first time I've seen this masterpiece. As a huge fan of the cinema, it's embarrassing. So what's not to say about this movie? It's perfect. The acting is stunning, the cinematography stunning, the locations completely genuine, a story so well told and heavy with themes such as loyalty and family. I've already used the word genuine, but that's what really struck me. I really felt an authentic Italian/American vibe, from the homes in New York to the hills of Sicily. The end of the film is also brilliant, portraying the takeover and beginnings of Michael Corleone's reign. I can't wait to see the second one.Among the Best - MrMoviePicker
This compulsively watchable tale about a family snared in a web of organized crime is, quite simply, one of the greatest films ever made.
At almost three hours, one might expect this evenly paced film to drag; but the incredible story pulls you in and rivets you to your seat. As Vito and his sons are gripped by a violent world of political machinations, so we go with them.
For me, THE GODFATHER (and THE GODFATHER PART 2) always feels fresh; on every viewing I seem to learn something new. And I can think of no higher praise.
