The Guru
"Hard to resist!" -Los Angeles Times
Marisa Tomei and Heather Graham star in this hilarious, sex-obsessed comedy from the makers of Bridget Jones’s Diary! Sharonna (Graham) is an "alternative" film actress who takes a young man (Jimi Mistry) under her wing to show him how to make it in her unique variety of show biz. But after a chance encounter with a ditzy socialite (Tomei), this would-be actor finds himself playing a very different part: that of a mystically wise - and totally bogus - sex guru. Now, dispensing advice on everything from free love to sexual nirvana, he’s about to be catapulted into a wildly comic, erotically outrageous version of the American Dream in this wickedly entertaining comedy romp.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever fall for a costumed Indian Bollywood takeoff musical! This was released in Australia before North America, thats where I saw it first, and I went to it thinking "what a waste of time this is going to be", but was I ever wrong! Despite the fact this is about group dancing, Indian music, and experiencing cultural differences, at heart its a romantic comedy about a shy, energetic Indian guy who falls for a gorgeous, blond starlett (Heather Graham). He comes to America to become a star and ends up waiting tables and has to double for a guru at a private dinner who has passed out dead drunk. All the secrets of life he learns from his would-be lover get passed on to the world as words of wisdom from "The Guru", his new persona. The music and dancing will stick in your mind for days after. Its a real light, "feel good" film thats fun to watch, give it a try!Not that bad - Zorro
This is more a musical mixed with comedy than a comedy. Just like Grease, which it is “kind of based on". Remove the musical and you are left with a nice and funny movie.
As mentioned, the Bollywood influence is notorious as the main character comes from India, leaving to the USA in a search of the “American dream”.
An instant decision, change his life and becomes the Guru and later the Guru of Sex, from there is roll of funny situations, with Marisa and Heather doing a great job and keeping the movie alive, the end is almost predictable, almost.
If you don’t like the bollywood dances, do as I did just fast forward and enjoy the rest, you won’t regret. Not My Brand of Comedy - TheShamus
There are comedies and there are comedies. This is one of those "cute" comedies your 60 year-old mother might really find funny. There is a significant Bollywood influence ... which I think was pulled off much better in a movie like "Bollywood Hollywood".
So ... our lead actor comes from Indian to make it "big" in America. He ends up inadvertantly on the set of a porno movie. He falls in love with a porn actress who keeps her career secret from her boyfriend. The Guru becomes a sex Guru ... and well .. do I need to say more? There are really no surprises here.
Some people might find it funny to spoof Indian movies --- just because something sounds funny on paper, does not mean it works --- and I don't think it works.
If you like movies that you could describe as, "Zany" and "Wacky" -- maybe, "The Guro" is for you. If your grandmother happens to be Indian (or at least a fan of the Bollywood Genre) ... this could become a classic. For others -- it will be "hit or miss". For me, it is a "miss".
