The House Of Mirth
"One Of The Best Films Of The Year! A Crowning Achievement!" -Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
The glittering yet treacherous world of New York high society comes to brilliant life in the heartbreaking story of Lily Bart (Gillian Anderson, TV's "The X-Files"), a renowned beauty of exquisite charm who seeks a wealthy husband, but in a series of tragic events, winds up disgraced and discarded.
Adapted from Edith Wharton's novel and directed by Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives), The House Of Mirth is an intelligent dramatic sensation, which features an outstanding supporting all-star cast including Laura Linney (You Can Count on Me), Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction), Dan Akroyd (Ghostbusters) and Anthony LaPaglia (Sweet and Lowdown).

The House of Mirth offers no hope at the end of a miserable tunnel...
While were accustomed to happy endings, your best suited with a disney movie instead. The best selling novel by Edith Wharton depictes high society during the turn of the century, and its woes of courtship mishabs. Gillian Anderson Sparkles and shines with her memoriable role as Lily.
Anderson is refreshing as A strong willed woman looking for love in all the wrong places (Unusual character for that period). Her stubborness and morals end up doing her in, with the help of old habits like gambling and high spending. The House of Mirth - crazyboutmovies
Gillian Anderson (Scully!!) gave a convincing and heartfelt performance in the title role. The movie is beautifully filmed, and the pacing is perfect. The set designer did a very credible job in recreating the "feel" of the period. This is one of those instances where the movie does not take away the essence of the novel upon which it is based.More melancholy than mirth - Frederictonian
This is a well-acted costume drama set in the constrained and carefully observant New York society of the early 20th century. The story exposes the hypocrisies of that life, but it doesn't offer any answers for an intelligent woman who wants to make her own way but doesn't have the money to do it. One criticism of the movie is that one is never quite sure of Lily's motivation. She seems like she wants more out of life than marriage to a rich man can offer, yet she keeps looking for a rich man throughout the movie. If she's such an unconventional woman, why does she have such conventional desires? In any case, a movie worth watching.
