The Indian Fighter
Only one man has the power to stop a war.
Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau and Lon Chaney star in this "exciting account" (Leonard Maltin) about a man who made his name fighting Indians...but now must use his peacekeeping skills to keep wronged Sioux warriors from massacring a wagon train and a nearby fort!
After the Civil War, Johnny Hawks (Douglas), the Indian Fighter, returns to the West and establishes a treaty with the Sioux Indians. But when two renegade frontiersmen (Matthau and Chaney) seeking a legendary Indian gold mine murder the brother of the Sioux chief, tensions escalate endangering every man in the territory!

When you look at American western cinema through the prism of Hollywood, questions always arise as to how close to historical reality has the screenplay been written, and presented, after the final cut.
"The Indian Fighter", starring Kirk Douglas does a good job of providing 88 minutes of beautifully photographed entertainment. The wide-screen Cinemascope presented in glorious Technicolor looks great. Douglas is at the height of his charismatic screen presence, and the great outdoors of Utah stands in well for the northern regions of a newly opening area of the U.S.(Montana, I believe.)
The only problem is Douglas' sweetheart, a beautiful Indian woman played by Elsa Martinelli. The young ingenou might be very photogenic, especially when she disrobes to bathe in the river, but trying to believe she is actually a native person is almost absurd. Otheriwise, the casting is good and the characters believable. All in all, not a bad time-waster, for a weekend couch-rider, who enjoys an occasional oater, from the classic period of American westerns. Oh, yes...it is based on a true story, for what it's worth.
