The King of Marvin Gardens
"An Irresistibly Fascinating Film..." - Time Magazine
Oscar winner Jack Nicholson (1997 Best Actor, As Good As It Gets) stars with Oscar nominees Bruce Dern (1978 Best Supporting Actor, Coming Home) and Ellen Burstyn (1971 Best Supporting Actress, The Last Picture Show) in one of the most influential and unforgettable films of the American cinema.
Two years after his star-making role in Five Easy Pieces, Nicholson reunited with director Bob Rafelson for this gritty story of small-time losers and big-time dreamers in Atlantic City. Dern co-stars as Nicholson's older brother, a scam artist who's all style and no substance, and Burstyn excels as an aging beauty who has prostituted herself for an elusive shot at happiness.

Nicholson is restrained - Poet
The King of Marvin Gardens is basically a character study where Jack Nicholson plays the "straight man" to Bruce Dern's wild character. It is quite a stretch for good ol' Jack to be so restrained and the result is neither awful or great.
The story itself is a little all over the place at times and it is difficult to get on board. Yet, it is not a total waste of time either.
True fans of Nicholson will appreciate the opportunity to see another side of his acting skills.
