Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz star in this smokin' comedy about a mild-mannered bank employee with one crazy secret.
Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) is pretty much as washed-up as he could be. But after getting kicked out of the hip new club, the Cocoa Bongo, he finds a mysterious mask that can transform him into a cartoon-like and mischievous alter-ego, giving him the ability to say and do pretty much anything he wants.
But no amount of shenanigans can weasel him out of the consequences when he attracts the attention of the beautiful Tina Carlyle (Diaz), her malicious "boyfriend" Dorian Tyrell, and the suspicious police officer, Mitch Kellayway. The movie quickly transforms from the misadventures of an underdog into the victory of a superhero.
This was my all time favorite movie when I was growing up, and in my opinion it is Jim Carrey's best performance. No matter how many times I watch it, it only gets funnier. The movie is a strange mix of hard reality cushioned by cartoon enthusiasm (Not to mention a whole lot of laughs). Truly timeless!Comical movie in goofy fashion - moviemonger
Stanley Ipkiss, a clerk at an Edge City bank, is a shy, luckless romantic who is regularly bullied by nearly everyone around him, including his boss, his landlady, and car mechanics. His only friends are his dog Milo and his co-worker Charlie. Gangster Dorian Tyrell runs the exclusive Coco Bongo nightclub while plotting to overthrow his boss Niko; therefore Tyrell sends his singer girlfriend Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz) into Stanley's bank with a hidden camera, in preparation to rob the establishment. Stanley is smitten with Tina, and she seems to reciprocate; but after being denied entrance to the Coco Bongo, Stanley is stranded with a broken-down rental car at the city's filthy harbor, where he finds a mysterious wooden mask. When he takes the object home and puts it on, it comes alive, wraps around his head, and transforms him into a wackily-suited, green-headed, cartoonish figure called "The Mask", a trickster unbound by any limitations whether be personal inhibitions or physical laws, who cheerfully exacts revenge on some of Stanley's tormentors (in comical goofy fashion) and terrifies a street gang that attempts to terrorize him.jim is on fire!! - seb1
This is easily Jim Carrey's greatest picture! Not only that but in my opinion this was one of the funniest films of the `90s. This is such a fun movie that you can see it 10 times and it's still as fun as the first time. The film stars Jim Carrey in another amazing performance and the BEAUTIFUL Cameron Diaz in her debut.
Also this is kind of like the Rocky Horror Picture Show of my generation. I remember Halloween 1995 when my friends and I dressed up as the characters from this movie and did the Cuban Beat! :)
