The Mask of Zorro
When a power-crazed despot schemes to buy California from Mexico, it takes two Zorros - the legendary Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) and his chosen successor Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), a dashing bandit-turned-hero - to defeat the tyrant's unscrupulous plans. But can even their combined skills be enough to achieve de la Vega's ultimate goal: revenge against the man who killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter and held him prisoner for twenty years?

The Mask of Zorro is a movie which shows us the passing of the torch from an old Zorro to a new defender of the people. At the start of the movie Zorro is captured and de la Vega has left the country. Fast forward twenty years and Vega has returned, Zorro has escape from prison and a new, younger Zorro must be trained.
The film left me a bit cold at times. The style is very dramatic comic-book style. Zorro often performs overly-showy stunts, the many "no-name" attackers are always easily defeated and there are some extra scenes that don't seem to do anything besides show us how amazingly agile Zorro is at fighting, fencing and dancing.
The movie does has it's good points. The action scenes where Zorro is fighting main-character opponents and not no-names are well done. The acting is solid (this is a great cast) and there is some clever dialogue.
Mask of Zorro drags on a little, running for just over two hours. And I think the pacing could have been improved by cutting out some of the showy extras and getting on with the story.
For a comic-book/super-hero style of movie, it's pretty good, over-the-top action.A new classic - Butterfly_girl
The Mask of Zorro is the story of a man who had everything he could ever want: an exciting life, a loving (and stunning) wife, and a child to carry on his work. One night, he loses everything. The only thing he has left is his desire for revenge and to help his fellow human beings. The story winds its way through many classic plot points: the old and wise teaching the young and foolish, a pair of fiercely loyal brothers, beautiful women, chase scenes, and, of course, a final double-duel with the power changing hands with every camera angle. Conclusion? A well acted, well written, well done movie."Vigorous" - Oliver
...as the lady proclaimed of the new Zorro! This is one well-acted, action-packed delight. It's predictable, but then,we WANT Zorro to deliver! The casting is perfect! Banderas is a dashing and mischievous new Zorro while Hopkins is the perfect mentor - the vintage version. Jones plays (and dances)well with Banderas :) The bad guys are truly bad and we can't wait to see them get what they deserve. Not a second of boredom! Certainly not an award winner...just great fun.
