The Misfits
Gable and Monroe in their last screen roles!
Expertly directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Miler, The Misfits is a "probing, exciting drama" (Film Daily) of honesty, intensity and sheer poetic brilliance.
Divorced and disillusioned, Roslyn Tabor (Marilyn Monroe) befriends a group of "misfits," including an aging cowboy (Clark Gable), a heartbroken mechanic (Eli Wallach) and a worn-out rodeo rider (Montgomery Clift). Through their live-for-the-moment lifestyle, Roslyn experiences her first taste of freedom, exhilaration and passion. But when her innocent idealism clashes with their hard-edged practicality, Roslyn must risk losing their friendship... and the only true love she's ever known.

a eulogy for Marilyn - manwithoutaname
Under the magnificent directorial skills of John Huston (Maltese Falcon, African Queen), Marilyn Monroe gives the performance of her life. Also superb are Clark Gable, Eli Wallach, and Montgomery Clift, who sometimes steals the scene. Gable, Monroe, and Clift died shortly afterwards, so there's a melancholy aspect to this film. Misfits builds to a powerful climax, a meditation on meaning, cruelty, and love. A classic. But be warned, horses were very possibly harmed in this movie.Monroe's best film - perhaps - frankenstein
It's the first time I see this film, one of the lesser known of Monroe's films, certainly plays a different sort of character than many of her "dumb blonde" movies , and the movie displayed her potential as a great actress - too bad she was cut short. Also Gable's last movie , great acting by Clift and Wallach as well. Overall a pleasant surprise for me.Unorthodox in its time - Elliott1
This is a fine film that was not a commercial success - partly, I suspect, because its two major themes were completely out of step with their time.
In a time of economic boom and optimism, no one was interested in thinking about meaningless lives. And in a time of the unthinking rape of the environment, no one was much interested in dumb cruelty to animals, let alone the few surviving wild horses. The performances are brilliant too.
