The Natural
He lived for a dream that wouldn't die.
The incredibly talented pitcher Roy Hobbs is wounded by a gun shot wound at an early age and suddenly disappears from the limelight. Now middle-aged, Hobbs comes from out of nowhere to lead a losing team to the championship, face his past, and win the woman who owns his heart.
Director Barry Levinson and an all-star cast including Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger and Barbara Hershey deliver a "sport film which projects with understanding the mythical qualities that Americans associate with baseball." -The Motion Picture Guide

This film might inspire hard-line baseball fans. Frankly, it put me to sleep. I would not allow my children to watch it for the vices and violence, not to mention confusing story line. To its credit, it tells the story of a man who truly loves baseball, for the sport of it. He is not persuaded by the greed and politics too often ruling the sports world. The story could have been told in half the time.A Classic - bubbapid
Not just a movie about baseball The Natural is a poetic gem that touches on the themes of love, tradgedy and redemption. A cast of many memorable characters, good acting and wonderful cinematography combine to make a thouroughly enjoyable film.
4 starsMajor League meets Shakespeare! - karembeu
This movie is one of my all-time favourites, and as such I tend to gush about it, but it is a genuinely beautiful movie. It's a fairy tale of sorts, with a flawed hero, and every other archetype you could expect in a movie - and even though you know what will happen at the end, you are still riveted and moved.
The cinematography is also excellent, with the use of light and dark becomeing a character in the plot, not just a technique. I have yet to watch the end of The Natural without having the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end :D
And did I mention it is a pretty decent baseball flick too? Major League meets Shakespeare!
