The Opposite of Sex
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll even be offended.
Dedee Truitt is the opposite of sweet sixteen. Politically incorrect, outrageous, and bracingly honest, she descends on the Indiana town of her half-brother Bill like the force of nature she is. Within weeks Dedee seduces his beautiful but befuddled live-in-boyfriend Matt, announces Matt's the father of her unborn child, and escapes with him--and $10,000 of Bill's money--to the not-so-bright lights of Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Matt's other boyfriend blames Bill for his disappearance, and gets even by pushing for an investigation by the local sheriff--who incidentally carries a torch for Bill's best friend Lucia, a wickedly acid spinster who disapproves of everything Dedee does--and hey, who can blame her?

How can you make a movie this boring? - Chris13
This seemed like one of the longest movies I've ever seen, and not in a good way. While they certainly tried, this movie ended up so boring that I had to just let it run while I walked off. They failed to create characters that you actually cared anything about. They all seemed irrational in their interactions with other people. The acting is barely tolerable and mostly quite unbelievable. "A scathing comedy"? I don't think so. "Mildly amusing at times"is more like it. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. Perhaps it just lost too much since it's 1998 release. Yawn....One of Christina Ricci's First Mature Roles - Gregg
Trouble making teenager DeDee (Christina Ricci) runs away from home in Louisiana and lands on the doorstep of her gay half-brother (Martin Donovan) whose life she proceeds to make miserable for no apparent reason other than that she can.
The narration by Dedee is at times insightful and reveals some of the typical film making conventions, but it is mostly narrow minded and very mean spirited just like DeDee. The film is more comedy than drama but to label it as simply a comedy would be to me misleading.
Christina Ricci is quite good in the role of DeDee, a very memorable and incredibly manipulative character. Elsewhere Martin Donovan seems well cast as Bill her older half-brother while Lisa Kudrow (Friends) plays a character very much against type and Lyle Lovett also appears. The rest of the supporting cast is for the most part none to suble, but that seems to work well here at least.
The lack of a location budget for this independent film is more than a little obvious when we are presented with a Southern Ontario border crossing with large mountains in the background.
The film is written and directed by Don Roos who recently penned the Jennifer Anniston/Owen Wilson vehicle "Marley & Me".
