The Outsiders
They grew up on the outside of society. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking to belong.
In 1966 Tulsa, teenagers come two ways. If you're a "soc," you've got money, cars, a future. But if you're a "greaser," you're an outsider with only your friends... and a dream that someday you'll finally belong.
Francis Coppola's powerful film of S.E. Hinton's classic novel captures how it feels to be caught between childhood's innocence and adulthood's disillusionment. The ensemble is a Who's Who of young talents of the past two decades: Matt Dillion, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and Ralph Macchio. Movingly and in an intesely visual style, Coppola has made these street rats and their struggle heroic - and unforgettable.

Packs an emotional punch! - Alribo
My son just finished reading this book (as required in Grade 8). Although he liked the book better (I have never read it) he thought the movie was fantastic.
I remember watching the movie as a kid. To me, the emotional punch is more now than it was then. I am struck by the friendships in the movie, the goodness of the characters, the tragedy of the ending...
Yes, it is a great cast too.
This is a quality movie.Wrong side of the tracks... - cathyottawa
...that's where Ponyboy and Johnny are from. Today, it's punks and metalheads, emos and goths, preps and jocks. In the 50s, it was "soc's" and "greasers", and the divide was clearly economic, pitting rich kids against poor kids.
C. Thomas. Howell is the star, and he's quite good, but it's Ralph Macchio's tender, heartwrenching performance as Johnny that you're most likely to remember. Matt Dillon is also a real standout here in a cast that boasts many Hollywood A listers in their unknown years (Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane)
At it's heart, this is a coming of age story for Howell's Ponyboy. A look at highschool cliques is nothing new, but this has such an authentic feel to it, and an honest approach. It also takes it further than the classroom, and shows us how the social divide spills over into society itself.
Look for blink-and-you-miss-them roles by Tom Waits and a very young Sophia Coppola (she asks for change at the Dairy Queen).Amazing cast - Howards
I also was thrilled with this book as a teen, read all of Hinton's books.
The movie is just the icing.
Amazing cast of teens before they were famous. Have fun noting the actors in the movie.
At the theatre I would have been happy to pay 6 bucks out of 8.
