The Paper
A behind the lines look at work, marriage and other forms of combat...
Henry Hackett is the editor of a New York City tabloid. He is a workaholic who loves his job, but the long hours and low pay are leading to discontent. Also, publisher Bernie White faces financial straits, and has hatchetman Alicia Clark, Henry's nemesis, impose unpopular cutbacks. Henry's wife Martha, a hugely pregnant former reporter of his, is fed up because he has so little time for his family. He is therefore considering an offer from Paul Bladden to edit a paper like the New York Times, which would mean more money, shorter hours, more respectability...but might also be a bit boring for his tastes. But a hot story soon confronts Henry with tough decisions.

The Paper is a brilliant comedy, with lots to commend it. The leads and supporting actors all give fine performances, and plot and subplots are all well done - nothing feels tacked on, rushed or unfinished. Viewers with modern, large televisions may regret the full screen ratio this release has, but I did not find it distracting.Easy to Watch - Marilyn
While there are several sub plots to this movie it is straight forward and suitable for family viewing. Another review gave away the plot. I dislike a reviewer doing this as it spoils any sense of expectation. This film gives some insight into the running of a newspaper from getting the news to trying to have a life with the frantic and unpredictable demands of deadlines. A light movie with acceptable language and no real violence. Possibly good for discussion with children 8 and up.A great recipe that falls flat - Cricri7
The paper has all the great ingredients that a movie needs: wonderful actors(you can't have a better actor than Robert Duvall), a great storyline and a great location (New York). You have all those great ingredients, yet this movie falls sort of flat and never quite takes you in.
It tells the story of Michael Keaton who works in a NY newspaper and he is going after a story where 2 young black men get arrested for the murder of 2 white middle aged businessmen. He falls by accident on the story that the 2 men are innocent of the crime and he goes on a wild spree to get the story. We follow him in this 24 hour journey to get to THE truth and we see the battle between him, who wants to tell the truth, and Glenn Close, who only wants to sell newspapers and doesn't care about the truth.
When a story is idealistic, it sometimes falls into a preaching mode and we see this in this movie where Glenn Close finally realizes that she must put journalistic integrity before sales. You never quite believe the sudden-end-of-the-movie conversion. It is a nice little movie but doesn't quite hit the spot!
