The People Under The Stairs
In every neighborhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid.
Wes Craven, the director of The Serpent and the Rainbow and Shocker, locks you inside the most terrifying house on the street. Trapped inside a fortified home owned by a mysterious couple, a young boy is suddenly thrust into a nightmare.
The boy quickly learns the true nature of the house's homicidal inhabitants and the secret creatures hidden deep within the house.
Stunning visuals highlight this inventive film that the San Francisco Chronicle calls, "Wes Craven's most satisfying movie."

A great line that pretty much sums up the underlying themes of the film. I mean, there's only so much variety you can add to the genre nowadays so obviously Wes Craven 'borrowed' from other directors and utilizes a montage of styles to his advantage; however, there are also a lot of completely original components to this one.
For example, it's rare to see a young, black protagonist in older horror films especially, which I found refreshing and very cool. The hero is instantly likeable and a unique, well-drawn character.
I enjoyed the fact that there is a pretty heavy-handed moralistic backbone to this film that never felt over burdening. The 'people under the stairs' obviously symbolize the inhibitions and prejudices that individuals can develop which cause them to act irrationally as a result of their fears. As the film eventually proves, these repressed issues eventually reveal themselves and destroy us. The film basically suggests that we must achieve freedom from these prejudices that result in classism, racism, sexism, etc (on both ends). The oppressors eventually become the oppressed due to their utter stupidity and ignorance. I feel the need to mention these themes because I personally feel that such depth increases the value of a film and I enjoyed the movie more because of its layers. Excuse the over-analysis =)
Over all, The People Under the Stairs has a good vibe to it all around and never takes itself or its message so seriously that the viewer loses interest. It's a fun film that is unique in many ways.Pretty good for a horror - STEWandNAT
I'm not usually afan of horror movies, but this one is actually pretty good. I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites butI don't think you'll be disappointed. It's creepy and it has it's scary moments, the gore is kept relatively low, but the fear is turned way up. If you want an exhilerating horror experience this ones for you. Simply creepy.
