The Pope Of Greenwich Village
"Explosively funny. Tautly dangerous. Absolutely irresistible!" -Los Angeles Times
Turn up the Sinatra, put on a leather jacket, and slip into "a rollicking, high-voltage movie that produces tears of laughter" (New York Daily News). Mickey Rourke (The Rainmaker), Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) and Daryl Hannah (Splash) "create emotion-charged characters who tingle with energy and play with conviction" (The Hollywood Reporter) in this modern-day classic that's as robust and powerful as Italian espresso!
In New York's Little Italy, smooth-talking hustler Charlie (Rourke) works in a restaurant and dreams of one day buying his own with his girlfriend Diane (Hannah). His wiry wheeler-dealer cousin Paulie (Roberts) waits tables, skims money off checks and is always scheming to score big. But they're all about to pull a scam on the wrong guy - Bed Bug Eddie (Burt Young, Rocky), the Mafia king of Greenwich Village! Now these small time con men are in big-time trouble - trouble so big that even their mobster uncle might not be able to save them!

I preferred this movie when it was called Mean Streets (1973, starring Robert De Niro and Harvey Keital. Directed by Martin Scorsese). The pope of greenwich village and it's performances comes off as amateur hour if you compare the two. Just a cheap knock off as far as I'm concerned.
USELESS FACTS:
Rickie Lee Jones had originally written and recorded an instrumental demo as a theme, but it was rejected in favor of Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind." The demo, which retained the title "Theme for the Pope" (because of the movie), wound up on her 1984 album The Magazine.Boring!! - Cricri7
I rented this movie because I did not get to see it when it first came out. I rented it on the basis that Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts are excellent actors, although their careers went down the drain along with Rourke's original face before his many face lifts, and I was dissapointed. They are indeed good actors but the storyline and the dialogue fall flat on their faces! I won't even talk about Daryl Hannah's performance because I don't want to be mean.
All in all, this is not a very good movie. The performances are good, but there is no dialogue to speak of. The movie doesn't go anywhere. Even if you feel nostalgic, don't rent this movie!Rourke Rocks - MikeMagic
This is a really good movie. It is classic Mickey Rourke and a solid reminder why he was considered one of the greatest prospects in the 1980's. His powerful performance in the pope of greenwich village is well worth the watch. It is a typical low life type of mafia story - not a comedy - as some sites mistakenly claim. It is entertaining from beginning to end, has a good and never predictable plot with great characters. This isn't Goodfellas but I highly reccommend it.
