The Prince of Tides
Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte star in the stunning screen adaptation of Pat Conroy's best-selling novel, The Prince Of Tides.
Nolte is Tom Wingo, a disillusioned southern coach who must reveal his tortured childhood in order to help his troubled sister. Streisand is Susan Lowenstein, the determined psychiatrist who battles Tom's resentment and rage in search of the truth. Their antagonism gradually gives way to love, as Tom and Susan find the secret that unlocks his sister's torment and the courage to change their own lives. Critically acclaimed as the best movie of the year, The Prince of tides was hailed by Jeffrey Lyons as "a blockbuster, must-see, can't-miss movie." Streisand also won rave reviews as director, assembling a superlative supporting cast that includes Blythe Danner, Kate Nelligan, Jeron Krabbe, Melinda Dillon and her own son Jason Gould (as her screen son, Bernard).

A Brilliant Performance By Nick Nolte In A Very Powerful Movie - revsdd
Nick Nolte's movies have ranged from the very enjoyable to out and out disasters. As far as his performances go, he's usually good but never quite reaches the heights of greatness. But then there's "The Prince Of Tides." Barbra Streisand might have produced, directed and co-starred, but this is Nick Nolte's movie from beginning to end, and his performance is brilliant. He captures his character's complexities perfectly - his repressed emotions, his unwillingness to face conflict or trouble and his underlying pain in a powerful scene in which the family secret is finally revealed. Streisand as director does a good job of building up to that revelation; Streisand as co-star is just that - a good partner for Nolte who's wise enough and confident enough to let him carry the movie.
The story - revolving around Tom Wingo (Nolte) travelling to New York from his beloved southern home to be with his sister who's just attempted suicide - is heavy at times. With the sister's suicide attempt and the general dysfunction all the lead characters deal with, it had something of an "Ordinary People" feel to it, although the conclusion is more hopeful than that film was. The viewer is drawn into the story right away with a surprisingly effective opening narration by Nolte that intrigues us, the movie ends on the perfect note of reconciliation within Tom's family and a powerful closing narration by Nolte. Music doesn't usually make or break a movie for me, but kudos to James Newton Howard, who was responsible for the original music. It was absolutely perfect - it suited the movie superbly and was itself very moving. The movie weakens a bit after the revelation of the secret, turning a bit sappy as Tom and Lowenstein (Streisand) become romantically involved. You could see that coming from the start, but I found it unnecessary - an unnecessary diversion. Still, one can't deny the basic power of the story or the strength of the performances.Wow. - Radio_Jane
This movie will move you and make you think. A beautiful but haunting story of love, mental illness and duty, Prince of tides is the only movie Nick Nolte ever made where you don't instantly hate him, although it may be a little to melodramatic for some, it is an engaging story, and has some really funny dialogue.(Oh Herbert...country boys got your fiddle...."). I guarantee you will love this movie
