The Return of the Native
Love would bind them together, but fate would tear them apart.
The breathtaking English countryside sets the stage for a spellbinding triangle of love, desire and destiny in Thomas Hardy's timeless romantic classic about an ambitious beauty and the two men who will sacrifice everything to claim her. Eutstacia Vye hates the rural home she shares with her grandfather and dreams of the day she can escape "this graveyard of a heath." The peasants call her a witch, for she enchants every man she meets... including her handsome suitor Damon Wildeve, who has promised to marry another. But when a well-to-do young man returns home from Paris, she sends Wildeve back to his fiancée, and uses all her seductive powers to win Clym Yeobright's heart. Soon Eustacia is making wedding plans of her own, but unknown to her, Club has decided to stay in the country. Now their footsteps are set upon a road that will lead them from the height of romantic passion to the crossroads of temptation and tragedy in an unforgettable epic masterpiece.

I've never been a fan of Thomas Hardy but I thought I'd throw caution to the wind and rent this adaptation with Clive Owen. Such a mistake. About 10 minutes in I was looking for the nearest pencil to shove into my eyeball and wondering how Clive's agent convinced him to star in this really lame made for tv movie. The cheesy set coupled with Hardy's "women are evil" message was just too much and I ended up willing myself to sleep halfway through.
Unless you're *really* into British flicks, pass this one up and save yourself from the misery.
