It shouldn’t surprise you (but it does) how well Streep plays the alpha-female leading her splintering family down some rapids on vacation. Bacon also nails his character with equal parts charm and creepiness. The action scenes and production hold up pretty well and a sufficiently authentic story of a family terrorized by criminals will freak you out regardless of the decade. There are a few of your typical Hollywood standards, but some formula can be tolerated when intertwined with an original story. An Enjoyable Watch - Booswalia
I thought this movie was quite good. It's not for everyone, mind you. It's not filled with violent action shots. Personally, I found that rather refreshing. The scenery is wonderful and of course how could a movie go wrong with Merrill Streep and Kevin Bacon. Their performances are flawless.Just your average action thriller. - cathyottawa
This movie looks and sounds like it should be very exciting - but there's something rather... mundane about it.
Watching it, it will seem familiar, because it follows a paint-by-number path. You know more or less what's going to happen. You have a pretty good idea how it's going to end. There is little creativity or surprises.
The scenery is beautiful, and the rafting scenes are very well shot. You'll almost feel like you're in the boat with them. Meryl Streep is of coarse good, playing a strong woman. And Kevin Bacon plays creepy villian very well.
The movie starts off quite slow, as it establishes the marital problems between Streep and her hubby, and the issues between father and son. It builds the tension slowly after Bacon and his partner join their trip. You know what's eventually going to happen, and you're just kind of waiting for the movie to get there.
It doesn't really pick up until the second hour. It becomes a little more exciting then, but, as I said, there are really no surprises. I think they probably had more fun filming this movie, than we did watching it.
