The Robe
"One Magnificent Scene After Another..." -Variety
The first movie ever filmed in CinemaScope, The Robe was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1953, including Best Picture for Richard Burton. Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, the Roman centurion charged with overseeing the crucifixion of Christ. But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed.
Its inspired story set to a spectacular score, and featuring an all-star cast, including Victor Mature and Jean Simmons, The Robe remains one of the screen's greatest biblical epics.

Might I say 4 and a half? - ShawnConnery
Even if you are not a practising Christian or unfamiliar with the story of Christ or the Bible, this story is interesting. The movie grows in value, though, if you are. Containing something for everyone, including action, suspense, romance, and even humour, this is definitely a Biblical epic that fans of the genre should see. Many moving and inspiring points, especially if one is a Christian. Other than the bit of violence that the Christians displayed in the movie (and the depiction of Jesus on a cross), it mostly agrees with the Bible, showing a misunderstood and hated group within the Roman empire for no reason, a group motivated by love, charity, justice, and a desire to preach to the world. It's sad to see how most of Christianity has deviated from this. Good acting, most impressed with Victor Mature. This Robe drags. - Anonymous
I have waited for over 50 years to see this again.
It seemed to drag when I saw it in 1956, and it really drags now.
Ponderous, without majesty.
The depiction of the early Christians brought mildly astonished smiles to my face, as I expected these otherworldly beings to be transported upwards at any moment.
The sight of Jean Simmons was the only relief.
After seeing this again, my vote is for the lions! And what if we crucified? - Virtual_Cinephile
The Robe helps the viewer appreciate the psycho-spiritual load that a Roman citizen of high birth might have born at revelation of his personal role in the crucifixion of the Christ.
Simliarly, we see the emotion and madness in Judas Ischariot and torment in Demetrius in his immediate understanding of the crucifixion act.
What might it have been like to participate as a disciple, a family member, or an affected witness, who bore experience to the culminating event resulting in the penning of the New Testament? Would anyone of us experience transformation? What would we feel and do? How would we react? Why write the New Testaments anyways?
Something happened, something real. This is a matter of historical fact. Although we quibble about biblical metaphor and interpretation, those who elect to believe in Christianity benefit through watching The Robe. It helps us understand the human experience of the people who were touched by Jesus' human life, and every person's role in his crucifixion at that time, and whatever Godly thing happened at that terrible event.
As a period piece, the film is enjoyable enough. We allow for the difference in production between the '1950s and today, marvelling at the extent of casting and backdrop. Burton's acting seems occasionally forced, but so what?
My *** rating reflects the tastes of the times. Perhaps our elders are more generous in valuation.
