The Rose
"Bette Midler is an explosion of joy, a triumph...she is moving, funny, tragic. As real and varied as life itself." -Cosmopolitan
In an Oscar-nominated performance, Bette Midler portrays a Janis Joplin-like rock star whose success is laced with so much booze, drugs and hard-living it eventually causes her downfall. Trapped in a self-created hell, Rose begs her manager (Alan Bates) for time off from her concert tour. When he refuses, she seeks comfort and love in the arms of a handsome drifter (Frederic Forrest), but even he cannot handler her life of excess. Electrifying musical numbers, including the hit song "The Rose" make the film pop culture classic.

Off-putting and vulgar 70's look at fame and fortune that isn't all it's cracked up to be. Midler's great, of course, but the charactor has been done before and since with better results. Title song always seems to stand the test of time, and adds an interesting contrast to the not-so-gentle surroundings.Midler's Rose - FilmJunkie
One of the better biopics stars Bette Midler as a Janis Joplin type singer who burns out quickly despite an amazing talent.
This is a moving and messy film with a great theme song that continues to resonate to this day.
Midler is perfection as the atypical beauty with a huge voice, if only this film was more fact-based it could stand up to the great 70's films surrounding it.
Thank goodness for Midler.
