The Sand Pebbles
The Sand Pebbles tells many stories. It's the story of China, a slumbering giant that rouses itself to the cries of its people -- and of the Americans who are caught in its bloody awakening. It's the story of Frenchy (Richard Attenborough), a crewman on the U.S.S. San Pablo who kidnaps his Chinese bride from the auction block. Most of all, it's the story of Jake Holman (Steve McQueen), a sailor who has given up trying to make peace with anything -- including himself. Nominated for nine Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Actor for McQueen, The Sand Pebbles blends explosive action with stirring drama and romance to form "engrossing entertainment of a special and memorable sort." The Sand Pebbles - oldmovies
One of my favourite movies. Very close to the book, the ending is a little different than the book however. The idea of finding signs of life outside of our solar system has intrigued man for a long time.
steve mckeen does a great job with his character. She obviously did her homework when it comes to astronomy. The story also plays on beliefs of God vs evolution. In my opinion regardless of your beliefs you will not be offended either way.Interesting and Powerful - upwitharts
The only movie that I can recall that covers this subject: The Boxer Rebellion in China. An interesting examination of a major culture clash, and for its time, does not make you squirm. It's also a pretty good period piece, and has lots of Attenborough-style sweeping panorama shots. Steve McQueen is brilliant, as usual. We had to watch over 2 nights--it's a bit long. That's our only criticism.
