Specials, The
For years, The Specials have been the also-rans of superheroes, getting whatever missions the better groups are too busy to take. As the 6th or 7th best superhero team in the world, The Specials are stuck with too much time on their hands. They have turned their energies inward, engaging in petty infighting, intra-group love affairs, financial squabbles and misguided attempts to better their image.
But now, that's all about to change. With The Strobe (Thomas Haden Church), The Weevil (Rob Lowe) and Amok (Jamie Kennedy) leading the way, The Specials are on the threshold of greatness. The equivalent of winning the Oscar® for super-heroes, The Specials have inked a deal with the toy conglomerate KOSGRO TOYS to produce a line of action figures. So..."X-Men watch out. This movie is too F*&$#!@ inane for adults and pretty f*!#@!*& coarse for the kids. S*!@, if you are offended by this post, don't rent the movie. Every other F*+#@! word is a curse. Some of the humor was pretty crude too. I don't know how they came up with a PG rating. More conservative parents would likely have turned it off. No blood, gore or graphic sex, so we put our liberal leanings to the test and let the kids watch. My daughter thought it was a bore (when are they going to do super-hero stuff). My 11 year old boy thought it was really funny, all that cool swearing. So I guess if you are an 11 year old boy, go for it!The Specials Vs. The Fantastic 4! - XTRUClerk
Well that's easy, the Storbe has lasers, you just can't beat lasers! Okay, that's silly. I only bring it up because I happened to see the two films about the same time. I enjoyed both of them too, but for wildly different reasons. I mean the two films are complete opposites. FF is full of high budget special effects, The Specials... The Specials isn't even very well lit. i did like the humor in both films. it was more ironic in this one than FF. Preferred the casting in this one, with Hayden Church being a favorite from Ned and Stacy (also on DVD by the way). Not a big fan of Rob Lowe though, who never removes his mask (makes you wonder if he really wanted to be recognized). There are also scenes in both films featuring the main female lead in their underwear, proving once again that fans really want to see their super-heores naked! And of course the biggest difference is that this one has no action at all, but, two really great comentaries by some really funny, interesting people. The commentary on FF made me want to do some yard work to escape the boredom. I'd recommend you rent both and do a little comparing and contrasting youserself. Cheers.Special Indeed - Zen-
Mystery Men. A film with a good concept, and great talent, but in the end was flat. The Specials, on the other hand is a beautiful, funny and at times sad examination of what a superhero team would actually face in their day to day lives. I loved this film. Well written, well acted, great concept. In the day and age of the crapping-on-the-toilet-because-I-ate-too many-exlax joke, this was quite refreshing. The release party for their actions figures is especially chuckleworthy. The best part about this film is that these people are very real.Thomas Haden Church...why are you not one of the op comedic actors of our generation. Noteworthy because Rob Lowe did not tape himself having sex with anyone underage, on the production.
