The Swarm
Monsters By The Millions -- And They're All For Real!
Producer/ Director Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno) now unleashes an end of the world thriller based on scientific fact. In Africa and South America, killer bees are a reality. Now The Swarm is on the move... into North America!
There are enough stars for five movies - Michael Caine, Katharine Ross, Richard Widmark, Olivia de Havilland, Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, Richard Chamberlain, Jose Ferrer, Patty Duke Astin, Lee Grant and Bradford Dillman. But the scene stealers are the supporting cast: an estimated 22 million bees, deftly deployed to depict deadly attacks on people and places. It's a nightmare that will give you quite a buzz!

Big production but not much more - Coconut_Willy
Although not as successful as the Poseidon Adventure or the Towering Inferno, I do believe that this is not as bad a movie as some may say. Master of disaster Irwin Allen certainly goes all out here with spectacular special effects which mostly consists in blowing up everything in sight. If you have an appreciation for this sort of unlimited budget action, you will not disappointed. The storyline is good enough but is really stretched to its maximum with numerous sub-plots that may be a bit superfluous. This might have worked better as a 90-minutes film than as a close to 3 hours epic. Nevertheless, it is very well produced. To say that the cast is stellar would be an understatement but the acting job is a bit suspect due mostly to the type of character they play and the uneven dialogue. Most of the main characters are quite good, but equally, most of the supporting characters are quite bad. The sets and locations are fabulous, the soundtrack is great as well as the camera work. This will never be considered a classic, even in the confines of this specific genre but the big production with big budget and excellent special effects makes this very entertaining even if the resulting film is way too long in my opinion.
