Vikings, The
"A spectacular, brawling epic." -Life
Hollywood legends Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine and Janet Leigh dazzle in this epic chronicle of brutal rivalry and blood-thirsty ambition. Roaring through the 9th century with powerful performances and 'brilliant visual drama" (Cue), The Vikings is a riveting "spectacle of have-at-'em action" (Los Angeles Examiner)!
Bitter hatred divides two brothers. Prince Einar (Douglas) is the son and heir of a savage Viking chieftain. Prince Eric (Curtis) is his unknowing half-brother, the bastard off-spring of Einar's father and an English queen. When the Vikings kidnap a princess (Leigh), her beauty inflames the desires of both men, forcing a bloody duel that decides their fate... and the future of the English throne.

Maybe this picture doesn't live up to it's contemporaries in terms of "wow" power, but it's well worth a look. True, the story could be improved upon a bit, and it's hard to see who's "good" and who's "bad", but for something to watch on an evening with your buddy or spouse, it certainly will do the job if this is your genre.Big Budget Period Film Fails To Keep Your Attention - bwod
Despite the best efforts of the production team, the film "The Vikings" falls short. What should have been a real epic movie simply fizzles, long before the ending. Visually spectacular, with a great cast, the problem lies in the script. You simply don't know who to root for here. Are the Brits the heros or the Vikings? With all the viscious blood-letting on both sides, I really didn't care for either side. Maybe it's just me, but I can only give this movie one marginal thumb up.Odin! - XTRUClerk
I'm surprised this movie was made. There's so much talk of worshipping pagan Gods, you would have thought Hollywood in the 50s would have shied away from it. The movie is an odd conbination of truly terrible moments and really inspired ones. One scene where Kirk Douglas jumps from oar to oar off the bridge of a viking ship with easy grace (apparently something he did himself) is so spectacular it's almost worth renting this just to see it. The climactic duel at the end is another highlight, with Douglas and Tony Curtis going at it high in a tower, seemingly about to fall to their deaths at any moment. This movie isn't for everyone and is a little slow, not to mention dated, but for lovers of the genre well worth seeking out. Cheers.
