Thief
James Cann is at his very best as a tough, wisecracking professional thief trapped between Chicago organized crime families and corrupt police. Filmed on rain-slicked Chicago streets, Thief captures the chilling suspense and human drama of professional crime.

Early Mann - Ziegler
Positive: Great acting by Caan, also nice appearance by Tuesday Weld. Great cinematography and soundtrack. You can tell Mann is headed to greatness. Shows the business of break in thieves. Nice plot
Negative: Well the movie is very 1980s.
Conclusion: Loved the movie but not one of Michael's best.No honour among thieves... - Chester
In this early directing and writing effort by Michael Mann, he shows a style that he would later bring to productions like "Miami Vice".
James Caan plays a thief who, although very skilled and proficient in the art of breaking into vaults and stealing jewels, has personality characteristics that may prove to be his undoing. He is stubborn and has a strong moral code (for a criminal)- this does not make him a "team player". But the fact that he doesn't give a f***, makes him dangerous to those who double-cross him.
Robert Prosky is excellent as a crime boss who is both charming and duplicious.
The sountrack music by Tangerine Dream is interesting but overwrought.Flat And One-Dimensional Film For James Caan Fans Only - bwod
When James Caan first exploded onto the screen, in "The Godfather", his presence was magnetic. In "The Thief", he plays a strong character, not that different from "Sonny", but here, he is the star, and carries the whole movie, rather well. It seems a bit dated, but if you like James Caan, check it out. I found it a little too long at 124 minutes but it's worth one marginal thumb up.
