Ricky Gervais was inspired by this film due to the mockumentary film style. I watched the film and had difficulty laughing though. But I admire the film for what it is. This movie has a cult following and if you're interested in Christopher Guest and the type of films he makes, you should check this film out.A Perfect Melding for Fans for Classic Rock and Comedy - TheShamus
The film, "This is Spinal Tap" was a true original. According to WIKI, the term "Mockumentary" was coined around the time this film was made.
Essentially, this "fake documentary" chronicals the halarious antics of a band called, "Spinal Tap". The participants in the Mockumentary play it straight. The film is so funny, partially, because it is so close to the truth.
The more you know about classic rock bands, the more the movie will make you laugh. In fact, the bogus songs are catchy -- and some, better than songs that make it on a legitimate chart.
True, comedy has moved on a bit, but this was the original -- the DNA for an entire genre of films that followed. The idea of having a "loose script" where the dialogue can be improvised is another unique feature of this movie.
The DVD has some extras which are worth seeing, especially if you are already well versed on the film.
The younger generation may not appreciate a 1984 underground classic. It deserves the accolades. While some "bits" may have been overplayed ... with the comedians "milking" their popularity in true, "Spinal Tap" fashion, the original movie is still great.

This is an absolutely hilarious movie following the exploits of the greatest fake rock and roll band of all time, Spinal Tap!
It has aged fairly well and still stands up to present viewing.
My favourite scene has to be when the boys get lost backstage at a concert. "Hello Cleveland!".
Inspired laughs with plenty of cameos to keep you guessing.
