True Grit
Special Collector's Edition
John Wayne earned the 1969 "Best Actor" Academy Award for this larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyes U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when an inexperienced Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which also features performances by Robert Duvall, Jeremy Slate and Strother Martin.

In fact Kim Darby is the real star of the film, the main strength of which I think is the quality of the dialog. When combined with Wayne's big screen presence and Campbell's credibly vying with him for sheer orneriness the result is a real gem during a period (the late 60s) that spawned an inordinate number of 'experimental' duds. You gotta love Duke - DocHaywood
I'm not sure what it is about John Wayne, but the guy is just watchable as hell. He's got that thing and he's one of the last really big movie stars. I've seen this film many times, along with a good many of his other titles and I never tire of seeing that same character of his. This was one of his last and one of his best. Beautifully shot and with a pretty decent backup cast, including such heavyweights as Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall. A great ride all the way through and terrific story. An Old Favourite - Junebaby
John Wayne shines in this dusty old favourite. Kim Darby also became one of my favourites after seeing this movie, and Glen Campbell was also very enjoyable. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, and the story line excellent. I’m thrilled that these old classics are now available on DVD, as the viewing and sound quality is unsurpassed. Still an excellent watch!
