Vatel
Passion. Seduction. Betrayal.
Starring Uma Thurman (The Avengers, Pulp Fiction), Gerard Depardieu (The Man In The Iron Mask) and Tim Roth (Rob Roy), Vatel is based on the true story of an ordinary man, a decadent king and the woman caught between them! In the west of France, Prince de Conde has a scheme to save his bankrupt province: he'll regain the favor of King Louis XIV with a weekend of spectacle and merriment. The plan's success rests with Vatal (Depardieu), the one man who can deliver the sumptuous food, elaborate amusements and all-out decadence fit for this king! But in the midst of it all, Vatel catches the eye of the beautiful Anne (Thurman)...and places himself in direct competition with the King! Visually stunning and grandly entertaining, it's a motion picture you must see to believe!

Every Event Planner, Banquet Manager, Hospitality Professional must see this movie! You think your work is stressful? The acting is superb, Uma Thurman is grandiose and Gerard Depardieu makes every royal look pale. This movie is not only entertaining but also historically informative. It is incredible how much work and effort, how many lives were altered by the simple fact that the King was making an appearance. Such a visit literally changed the face of the countryside. Emotionally intense I recommend this movie to anyone who likes period pieces.~ VATEL VACANT OF VITALITY ~ 2 3/4 Stars ~ - SqueakyChair
SNAPSHOT: Sumptuous and lavish production. Lacks crisp direction. Lacks any believable chemistry between lead actors. Performances are adequate but seem somehow lacklustre or just not complete enough to evoke the necessary level of empathy or emotion.
MORE THOUGHTS: Perhaps it loses much in the adaptation. But as a foreign film it is decent enough to watch and has a decent storyline, even if unimaginably portrayed. It does reflect the aristocratic decadence of the time.

FINAL WORD: ~ OK BUT SOMEHOW FATALLY UNENTHRALLING ~ or SoSaysSqueakyChaira visual treat - malice
sumptuous costumes, scenery and props - a visual treat - would have liked more behind the scenes in the extras section.
gerard depardieu puts in one of his few good performances in an english movie.
tim roth plays his usual roguish character.
an excellent tale about the decadent lifestyle of the nobility before the french revolution.
