Vera Cruz
"Full of dash and humor. A super western!" -The Hollywood Reporter
Legendary screen icons Gary Cooper (High Noon) and Burt Lancaster (Elmer Gantry) team up for a magnificent, action-packed western from director Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen) and screenwriters Roland Kibbee and James R. Webb. With sweeping vistas and larger-than-life heroics, it's a tale as bold and rugged as the characters it so brilliantly depicts.
Cooper and Lancaster portray Benjamin Trane and Joe Erin, two daredevil mercenaries who journey to Mexico in search of adventure -- and cold hard cash -- during the 1866 revolution. But they get more than they bargained for when the wealthy and beautiful Countess Duvarre (Denise Darcel) hires them to escort her (and a fortune in gold!) to Emperor Maximilian's fighting forces in Vera Cruz. The trial is fraught with danger, betrayal and murder...and when Ben is swept up in the revolutionaries' fervor, he and Joe find themselves at odds with the Mexican Army -- and each other!

Not Bad Western - ShawnConnery
Like the other reviewer noted, the movie is very average. Nothing really sends it through the roof, although there is decent acting, humour, adventure, and plot twists. The story is interesting, and the ending is surprising. The visual aspects aren't as great, especially as you can really tell the problems with editing, but if you pay attention mainly to the story, you might find yourself decently entertained. Two Big Stars in a Decent Western - MovieProf
Though I am not a huge fan of either Burt Lancaster or Gary Cooper, I have to admit that watching them together in "Vera Cruz" was entertaining. A supporting cast of Cesar Romero, Ernest Borgnine, and Charles Bronson add to the film, the latter two not yet having reached recognizable status. "Vera Cruz" deals with a chapter in Mexican history not often explored by Hollywood: the Mexican Rebellion of 1866. Filmed on location throughout Mexico, this is not the best western ever made by Hollywood, but it is action-packed and entertaining enough to spend 94 minutes on.
