Waking The Dead
Sometimes Love Has A Life Of Its Own.
"Billy Crudup and Jennifer Connelly give passionate performances" raves Leonard Maltin of Playboy Magazine, about this story of love, ambition, and the price of power. Filmmaker Keith Gordon delivers a psychological mystery of haunting proportions. When one man's 70's idealism confronts his 80's aspirations, he begins an emotional roller coaster that brings ghosts back to life and asks the ultimate question: Does love conquer all, even death?

While the two leads (Jennifer Connolly and Billy Crudup) are beautiful looking actors with more than notable talent, I cannot recommend this film to any but die-hard fans of these actors.
Structurally, intersplicing the first era of the story with the second era is needless. While billed as a mystery and a thriller, the film does not play up the mystery aspect that well; it's not very mysterious. Neither is the thriller aspect very thrilling. The political aspects of Connolly's work are only mentioned in passing so it doesn't work on that level. This leaves the relationship between Connolly and Crudup to hold the film together. The relationship is obviously conflicted from their different lines of work/life paths that they have chosen, fine. Their struggle to make it work against the norms of each others' environments is portrayed well enough, but their common ground is tenuous at best. Portions of the film without Connolly to balance Crudup seemed to leave him flailing under weak direction.
Film students can take note that the production team does a lot with a limited budget e.g. lighting, exteriors, sets, and music. est use of a Peter Gabriel song in a movie since "Say Anything". But it's a late and small redemption to a lacklustre film.
