Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was a movie ahead of its time away. Without the great advances in technology we have had over the last few decades, it still offers us some awe-inspiring visuals that will be sure to bring out the children we bury deep inside ourselves as we get older.
The sceneries, the songs, the candies...it all brings us back on a wonderful trip back in time.
As for Gene Wilder, he seemed like he was meant to play this role. Not as eerie as Johnny Depp in his recent portrayal of Willy Wonka, he brought a great sweetness and kid spirit to the whole thing.Sweeter than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Gregg
While some may argue that this version of the story is not as faithful to the Roald Dahl book as Tim Burton's recent remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it is still a far better movie.
The story of an eccentric candy maker named Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) who has offered a tour of his very secretive factory along with a life time supply of chocolate to anyone that finds one of the 5 golden tickets hidden inside Wonka Chocolate bars.
One young boy Charlie Bucket can hardly afford to buy a single bar but dreams of finding one of the tickets and taking his Grampa Joe (Jack Albertson) with him on the tour.
The interior of the candy factory though done on a limited budget and without the benefit of modern CGI was and is awe inspiring, particularly for children. Apparently to achieve the look of wonder on the faces of the children they were not shown this set until filming began.
One standout aspect of this film was certainly the music, to this day the songs from the film remain captivating. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score. One of songs written for the film was The Candy Man which would become a standard for Sammy Davis Jr.
As good as Johnny Depp is as an actor; the role of Willy Wonka was handled more effectively by the very talented Gene Wilder. Unfortunately the Depp portrayal comes across as a bit too creepy.
Another aspect of the film where it exceeds the remake is the portrayal of the Oompa Loompa's. Instead of eerie miniature digital recreations of a single actor we have a group of little people including at least one female, and most of whom could not speak English.
The DVD includes a commentary track with now adult children from the movie and is an interesting bit of nostalgia. The extra features also include a making of documentary Pure Imagination: The Story of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' as well as sing-a-long Wonka songs.Willy Wonka & Childhood memories - Rozalynd_the_Red
I watch this movie for the second time this past week. The first time was when it came out in the seventies.
Little did I know where some of my visions & songs from my childhood came, men in uniforms working and singing to tunes with rhymes.... "... what do you get when..." I have been huming these tunes for ever. Another childhood mystery solved.
I think the most enjoyable part was finally knowning ALL the words to the songs!!
