Withnail And I
London. The 60s. Two unemployed actors - Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and "I" (Paul McGann) - drown their frustrations in booze, pills and lighter fluid. When Withnail's Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) offers his cottage, the escape the squalor of their flat for a week in the country. They soon realize they've gone on holiday by mistake with their wits - and friendship - are sorely tested by violent downpours, less-than-hospitable locals, and empty cupboards. An intelligent, superbly acted, the hilarious film, The Criterion Collection is proud to present Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical cult favorite in its complete and uncut version.

Back to the 80's - ladiablesse
Saw this when it originally came out and was an immediate convert. Withnail was insufferably imperious and hilarious, the two chums' wretchedness soaked in the kind of rueful recall that teases out guffaws of recognition. Thirty-some years later, the movie still rocks, but with an 80's twinge of deja vu.Best British Comedy Film Ever - Hector66
It may be a bold statement, but I have yet to prove myself wrong.
All the actors in this movie are at the top of their game. They have all rendered unique and memorable characters, even down to the heavily intoxicated pub owner in the small hamlet the two main characters escape to. Ralph Brown's portrayal of Danny the drug peddler/entrepreneur was reprised in Wayne's World 2.
Like The Big Lebowski, Withnail and I has layers of comedy and sentiment. There is always something new to laugh at even after repeated viewings. Whether it's Uncle Monty's cat, or the shrieking traffic cop, there's comic intricacies well beyond the main plot.
The dialog is infinitely quotable. Each memorable line roles into another, so that if you were to say them all you would have recited the entire script. Even though the film is set in the sixties with an excellent soundtrack to compliment that fact, it actually feels timeless in the needs and wants of the characters. This film will age well, as a number of other classics do.
"Help! We've gone on vacation by mistake!"A black comedy with heart - ZombieInvasion
The first time, I watched this movie, I thought "What's the big deal?". The second time I watched the movie, I thought "How come I didn't realize that this is one of the funniest movies ever?" For some reason, this is one of those movies that gets funnier each time you watch it. Set in 1969 in and around London, Withnail and I, allows Richard E. Grant, to run amok, for 90 minutes. The result is a hilarious intelligent slacker comedy, with extremly memorable characters. An ideal companion peice to "Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas". All I can say, is watch this movie. And if you don't like it, watch it again.
