This intellectual wolf man film lacks bite because it’s so hard to take Jack seriously as he leaps like Peter Pan in 1930’s-esque wolf movie makeup. The effects damage a story with some promise including a fairly grounded (for a horror film) love story and some well-penned plot twists. Spader is especially well cast as he seems natural balancing sniveling and backstabbing. Pfieffer, on the other hand, added nothing of value in one of her blandest roles. You have got to love Nicholson (and his hair) as he wakes from his first post-bite slumber.2/3 of a very good movie - Superdave
The beginning of this movie, built around Jack Nicholson's slow and reluctant realization that he may be becoming a werewolf, really sparkles. Jack's performance, as a slightly grungy middle-aged everyman caught up in an absurd and increasingly frightening scenario, makes the first part of the film compelling viewing.
Act II introduces the charismatic Michelle Pfieffer as a rich bad girl, upon whom Jack becomes increasingly dependent as his condition begins to spiral beyond his control. As in any good horror thriller, secrets then come to light and the unknown and previously unthinkable begin to intrude into the contemporary world.
The finale, however, is a disappointing mish-mash of action thriller cliches - fights, chases etc. -and serves as a classic example of Hollywood's now lost capability to properly script Act III in a modern genre movie. It's a shame, as it lets down a strong Act I and a pretty watchable Act II.Like a dark fairy tale... - cathyottawa
This is classic Jack.
He is bitten by a wolf on a dark spooky night, alone on a creepy stretch of road. And he slowly turns into a werewolf.
The fun of this movie is watching the transformation. Minimal make-up and effects are used - it's mainly just Nicholson, giving a great performance.
There is great stuff between Nicholson and James Spader, who plays his protege in a publishing house.
The weak link here is Pfeiffer, who I found unconvincing, and pretty one-dimensional. I would have liked more Nicholson/Spader and the wonder of becoming a werewolf, and less Nicholson/Pfeiffer.
Still, if you're a Jack fan, or are just in the mood for a dark fairy tale, this is definately worth your time.
