Wonder Boys
An unfinished novel, a stolen car, a murdered pet and a failing marriage are just a few of the crises piling up like a logjam in this often hilarious story of bright promise gone awry.
During a single hectic weekend, college professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) scrambles to gather together a life that has suddenly reeled out of control. Along for the ride are his gifted but troubled student (Tobey Maguire, Cider House Rules), his eccentric editor (Robert Downey, Jr.), the married chancellor of his university (Frances McDormand, Fargo) who is pregnant with his child and his sultry student boarder (Katie Holmes, Dawson's Creek).
Directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential), this darkly comedic odyssey of self-discovery was hailed by Roger Ebert as "one of the best movies of the year."

Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey, Jr. WOW! Sounds promising. Now if only they'd been given a decent script to work with!
I truly thought that this was bad. Interminable. Dull from beginning to end. I'm trying to think of something good to say (especially since it's rated so highly.) Umm ... Well ... I guess the transvestite (Antonia, played by Michael Cavadias) looked real enough.
Enough of this. I don't want to think about it any longer.Michael Douglas' best performance - shawn5
This is a pretty damn-near perfect movie. The script is smart and very funny; the characters are quirky yet extremely likeable, and the actors portraying them do an amazing job (especially Michael Douglas in the performance of his career); and it has...(read more) a great director behind the camera (one of his previous films was "L.A. Confidential"). An amazing soundtrack (with a new song by Bob Dylan) tops it all off. No one should miss this, one of the best movies of 2000.Getting it right - Dooley_Womack
Michael Chabon's book gets the understated yet poetic treatment it deserves because everybody in the movie seems to actually give a damn. A rarity: a great novel becomes a great film, and as an added bonus Robert Downey, Jr's in it, too, delivering his quasi-bisexual editor's bon mots with obvious relish. Spiderman is endearingly naive, Mrs. Cruise is good, and Mr. Zeta-Jones walks the fine line between pitiable and pathetic. Let's hope somebody manages to get it right with The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, too.
