Great drama, great characters, great humor….great movie - moviemonger
This is one of my favorite movies of all-time. Of course, the bottom line with this picture for anyone should be its acting, which is top-notch across the board, its screenplay, which is well-written, well-paced and effective in weaving the various topics along the same plot-line, and its message, which is inspired, romantic, funny and ultimately, thoroughly entertaining. I personally love this movie so much because it brings home the message about work being “important”, but love meaning more than anything in the world, including professional achievements or material goods. The directing is fun and complementary to the story at hand, the ending is peachy, the dialogue is sharp, the characters all memorable, the moments precious and unique, and above all else…the film feels real and is entirely relateable to anyone with love in their heart. See it for any of the many reasons that make this film great, but make sure that you see it, because movies like this don’t come around every day.disarming - nasu
Renee Zellweger gets this two more points than it would otherwise deserve. It really is a shallow film in parts. Disguised as a romantic comedy-drama, it's really a character study of someone who has little character. Tom Cruise is not likeable for much of the film, even when down on his luck professionally. What saves it is there are enough engaging moments throughout to keep you involved in the story, and of course the gorgeous Zellweger's disarming performance. Well, it must be good because I still get a tear in the eye everytime I watch this film. The Ultimate Feel Good Movie - blackstone
This is a great movie, and a perfect example of how a good performance can bring a character to life. Everyone remembers James Stewart as George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life", and I feel the same way about Tom Cruise' performance in this movie. The best way I can describe it is by saying it feels alive.
I always find it funny when people call this movie a "chick flick". It's definately got many romance elements, but to me it's strictly a character study of Jerry Maguire, and how he finally sees what is good in life... nothing more, nothing less. The "chick flick" aspects just happen to be a part of his tale.
I also like Cuba Gooding Jr in his role (maybe a little over the top), and whether people admit it or not, Renée Zellweger is charming as the mother of Jonathan Lipnicki, who is also great. On top of the great acting, the soundtrack is killer, the inside jokes about greedy athletes are hilarious, and the writing/directing (Cameron Crowe)is top notch. Talk about nailing it!
Overall, this is one of the dozen or so movies made during the nineties that is absolutely essential viewing, for first timers or nostalgia seekers alike.
