The Color Purple
Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning story
Color it fuller, color it richer, color it even more of an enthralling movie experience. The Color Purple shines anew in this expansive deluxe 2-disc edition DVD.
Celie. "Mr." Sofia. Nettie. Shug. The unforgettable characters of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize novel brighten the screen in this rhapsodically cinematic adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg. At the center of the tale is Celie (Whoopi Goldberg in her movie debut), whose search for fulfillment in a world closed to her becomes a triumph of cruelty overcome by love, of pain eclipsed by joy. Acting and filmmaking honors all came to The Color Purple. But today as yesterday, its greatest honor is the embrace of movie fans everywhere.

Somehow I missed seeing this film in the '80s. I probably would have liked it more then. In spite of the weight of the material in Alice Walker's writing I found that Spielberg's direction had me thinking more about the polished visuals and less about the emotional impact of the characters. Spielberg directs beautiful movies, but, in this case, those beautiful production values protected me from the real impact of the story. Having said that, it did get an important story into the theatres. Scorses would have brought out more of the gritty reality but might not have had the same popular appeal at the time. In 2012, however, I think we are ready a Scorses or Spike Lee look at the story. The Color Purple - TheWiz
Fictional look at what it might have been like to be a black woman living in Southern USA at the turn of the 20th century. Incest, bullying, racism, rape, poverty, addiction and a host of other deprivations. This body of work is similar in style to Charles Dickens view of 19th century England. The main protaganist, Goldberg & Desreta (Celie) are outstanding. In fact the whole cast has their heart & soul in this film. A must see for all adults! Hats off to Alice Walker for this brief view of what life may have been like for an underpriviledged black woman who slowly discovers hope, pride, love and finally freedom.Great performances - Cricri7
Whoopi Goldberg is such an incredible and versatile actress that I have difficulty believing that she isn't doing acring anymore. She had excellent roles in the past, like this one, but we never see her on the big screen anymore. She plays the role of a woman sold to a brutal man, Danny Glover, while still in her teens. I thought the pace a bit too slow by moments but it was one incredible performance by Whoopi!
