The Doors
"There Are Things Known And Things Unknown And In Between Are The Doors..." -Jim Morrison
Jim Morrison (Val Kilmer), one of the most sensual and exciting figures in the history of rock and roll, explodes on the screen in The Doors, the electrifying movie about a time called the sixties and a legendary outlaw who rocked America's consciousness -- forever. Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLachlan, Frank Whaley, Kevin Dillon and Billy Idol also star.

I love The Doors music and was curious to know about the life of Jim Morrison and The Doors. The acting was great. Val Kilmer really looked like Jim Morrison and had all the movements and everything. However, 2 1/2 hours of Jim's drug trips were a bit much for me. I ended up just fast forwarding through the last bit. If you are "into" that you will LOVE the movie. It just wasn't my thing. If you liked Jim this movie will change your opinon - Chuck_Bytes
I like the music of the doors and don't know much about Jim and the band since it's a little before my time, but as Oliver Stone had done such a good job on the JFK facts, I trust this movie has some factual events. The content of the film leaves a lasting impact on the viewer to form an opinon about Jim Morrison. Val Kilmar does a great job playing the role and the supporting roles are also strong, but the movie leaves the viewer somewhat uneasy, maybe that was Oliver's intent.

I do not know much about the life of Jim Morrison or any of the members of "The Doors". This movie is definitely not the place to find the facts. In fact, this movie is not about the band, it is about "Jim Morrison".
Here are some things you will not find out about the band:
- The impact they had on music in the 60's.
- What the members of the band were link growning up.
- The financial success of the band, the number of albums
From this movie, it seems Jim Morrison was heavily into drugs and booze. He did some really stupid things when he was drunk/stoned ... like climbing out of a window. What is not established is why we are watching this movie in the first place. What is so special about "The Doors" that we need a movie? What is so special about Morrison that he became an icon in many countries?
If this movie is correct, Morrison has a "death wish" which he played out during his brief career with The Doors. Indeed, there does not seem to be much redeeming about Morrison other than the fact he was good lookin' to the ladies. He wasn't much of a boyfriend. He wasn't much of a lover. He was a "zero" when it comes to the relationship with his family. Apparently, he claimed his parents were killed, but his father was really in the military.
There are a few positives that keep this movie from the "bottom of the barrel". Kilmer's acting is good. The music (if you like The Doors) is generally good. By picking out concerts of significance, it is difficult to balance whether there was such a thing as a "normal" Door's live performance.
Perhaps they were going for some kind of performance peice here --- because too many scenes are filmed with psychodelia, strange lights, and altered states. It's like we are watching Morrison's life through Morrison's messed-up mind.
