Gosford Park
Tea At Four. Dinner At Eight. Murder At Midnight.
The Academy Award® winner for Best Original Screenplay, Gosford Park is a whodunit as only director Robert Altman could do it. As a hunting party gathers at the country estate, no one is aware that before the weekend is over, someone will be murdered - twice! The police are baffled but the all-seeing, all-hearing servants know that almost everyone had a motive.
This critically-acclaimed murder mystery features a who's who of celebrated actors. With a diverse cast of characters - all with something to hide - it'll keep you guessing right to the surprising end. Gosford Park proves that murder can be such an inconvenience.

Above the Stairs and Below the Stairs... - Frazham
Above the Stairs and Below the Stairs Gosford Park is an above average movie!
Set in an English manor house over the course of a weekend hunting party GP is a movie that succeeds brilliantly in transporting you to an earlier place in time and drawing you into the scandal and intrigue of the lives of the mixed bag of characters it portrays.
With a star studded (and large) cast I found you need to be paying attention to what is going on and who is being gossiped about otherwise you may get lsft behind... but a true character drama, the cast play their roles brilliantly with not one single actor failing to deliver their role with detail and (especially in the case of Maggie Smith) panache.
Admittedly this may not be a movie that everyone would enjoy; but if you like a movie where the characters drive the story (and there is a lot a characters in this one) and no detail is overlooked in setting the scene, then this is the movie for you!Not for Everyone... - cathyottawa
The key to enjoying this movie is knowing what you're getting into (as the widely different reviews demonstrate).
The descriptor is misleading - if you're expecting an action packed murder mystery, you're bound to be disappointed.
The murder is actually a very small part of this wonderful ensemble piece. It's actually about the stark difference between the lives of the rich in turn of the century England, and the serving class that tend to their every whim.
I loved the "behind the scenes" look at the day to day life of the serving class, and what it took to run a large household. This was done even better in another movie I love - The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins.
But I digress. Maggie Smith is a scene stealer, but just as good are Clive Owen, Emily Watson, Helen Mirren, Ryan Phillipe, and really the entire cast.
If I have one complaint, it's that the movie is probably longer than it needed to be, and does run along at a snails pace.
But if you're in the mood for mellow, with great performances, check this one out.Difficult color, Green! - duh_face
Without a doubt, Maggie Smith steals this movie with some great improved lines. Yes, Green is a difficult color.
With brilliant casting this film tells the story containing no unimportant characters. It's truly an ensemble cast, and we learn from the special features that much of the dialogue is unscripted. The intricacies of British social castes and their divisive nature provide the backdrop for this amazing and original screenplay.
Learning the accents early on is key to understanding the many plot lines not to mention figuring out who is with whom, who has slept with whom and with whom is everyone is sleeping. The frantic pace of the downstairs servants stands in stark contrast to the languor of the upstairs elite.
Definitely a movie worth owning.
