K-19: The Widowmaker
"An extraordinary epic of the sea. A suspenseful and thrilling film..." -Gene Shalit, The Today Show
Harrison Ford delivers one of his most powerful performances in this riveting action-drama inspired by a true story.
At the height of the 1960's Cold War, Russia launches its flagship nuclear submarine, the K-19. In command is iron willed Captain Alexei Vostrikov (Ford). Also aboard is the popular executive officer Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), who clashes with Vostrikov but shares his unwavering patriotism. As the K-19 heads toward American waters, a shocking discovery is made: the vessel's nuclear reactor system is leaking, imperiling the men and the sub's missiles. With time running out, the fearless Vostrikov and his crew join together as brave countrymen who must decide the true meaning of duty, honor and sacrifice.

A solid 4 STAR RATING - moviemonger
What else can you expect from a movie starring Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford, two of the best actors in the world. This experienced duo brings a blend of sweetness and experience in the movie's cast. Well, not to forget Peter Sarsgaard who portrayed the role of Vadim Radtchenko. Fantastic job!!
To summarize, I would just say that this movie is a must watch for all people interested in submarines as you indirectly get to know about almost all parts!!! Hehe!!An Inferior Hunt For Red October - sinic
Harrison Ford played Jack Ryan in most of the Tom Clancy movie adaptations. He wasn't in Hunt For Red October (probably the best submarine action movie I've seen where Jack Ryan was played by Baldwin) and this K19 movie almost made it seem like he was trying to make a similar movie, but it doesn't come together all that well. Even the premise of the movie is fairly similar ... it just doesn't deliver in the same way. Probably because Liam Neison is no Sean Connery.
I for one couldn't get past Ford's horrible Russian accent. It really took me out of the movie. Most of the other characters were forgettable.
The movie isn't horrible, but compared to other movies in the genre, it doesn't compete. At the end of the day, it is a pretty forgettable movie.Suspenseful submarine adventure - Filmgal
K:19 is not a fast-paced, action flick like the similarily themed U571 or other submarine movies like Crimson Tide. Instead, it's more about the dynamics of the Russian crew in this story which is based on true events.
In the height of the Cold War, Russia's first nucelar subamrine, the K19, is ready to test its missiles at sea with Captain Polenin's (Neeson)crew. After several test mis-haps, Polenin finds himself demoted and a new Captain (Ford) comes aboard. marred with several deaths in the construction of the sub, the K19 already has a reputation as "The Widowmaker" before it even leaves the dock. In the middle of the North Atlantic the nuclear reactor in the submarine begins to malfunction leaving a newly hired, fresh out of the naval academy lieutenant (Sarsgaard) to handle the situation along with his fellow crew members. The animosity between captains and the crew, and teh Russian command in Moscow lead to thrilling, edge of your seat suspense.
Its nota war movie, or a big action movie, but a true story based on characters. It is the actors who make the film watchable. It is a true story being told, making the film all the more gripping. 95% of the film takes place in the cramped and claustrophic submarine which furthers the tension in the air.
A great film to pass an afternoon by, K19 is a smart action thriller. If you haven't seen it, it's worthy of a spot on your Ziplist for a great night in.
