Rabbit-Proof Fence
Based On A True Story
Rabbit-Proof Fence-featuring the Golden Globe-nominated score by Peter Gabriel-is the powerful true story of hope and survival, and has been met with international acclaim! At a time when it was Australian government policy to train aboriginal children as domestic workers and integrate them into white society, young Molly Craig decides to lead her little sister and cousin in a daring escape from their internment camp! Molly and the girls, part of what would become known as Australia's "Stolen Generations," must then elude the authorities on a dangerous 1,500-mile adventure along the rabbit-proof fence that bisects the continent and will lead them home! As shown by this outstanding motion picture, their universally touching plight and unparalleled courage are a beautiful testament to the undying strength of the human spirit.

A very moving and inspirational story of three aboriginal Australian girls that takes place in the 1930’s. The three girls are sisters and the product of a mixed marriage. Due to this they are forcibly removed from their mother and sent to a school shelter a thousand miles away.
The three girls escape this “school” and begin an arduous journey back to be re-united with their mother and family. It’s very simply told and ennobling. If the purpose of film-making is to take a true story and put it to the screen with as little frills as possible, then this is a wonderful success! I do wish there were more films like this instead of all the slap-stick special effects and explosions which are the standard these days.Beautiful and tragic. - billie
Beautiful to look at, transparent direction, heart wrenching story. The casual heroism of the girls, the casual cruelty of the state, the casual ferocity of the landscape combine to make a powerful statement. It moves slowly at times, but so does walking 1200 miles to find your way home. It reminded me strongly of the policies in Canada, the way we moved all the native kids, both Inuit and Indian, into "schools" and tried to make them forget their language and their culture. A sort of innocent genocide on the part of the idiotic occupying culture, and a time of great agony for the aboriginal peoples. This is such a moving film, particularly when the two old ladies at the end are revealed as the two young girls, and the rest of their story is told. To learn as an afterthought that the cruelty applied to them continued again and again is just appalling. I'm glad I saw this film.Whites only need apply. . . - eleanorm
This film reminded me that when I applied for a teaching job in Australia, mid-60's, I was told there was a "whites only" policy. I didn't go to Australia, but found that something of the same philosophy existed in Canada, same time frame, same reasons. This film is a reminded of the ways in which the "white" world has tried to manipulate the world in its own image, and the ways in which the non-white world has resisted, with great but quiet determination. Sadly, the outcome isn't a certainty, as the epilogue with Molly and her youngest sister attests. This is a strong film.
