World Traveler
One woman wasn't enough. One road trip was.
Everyone thought handsome, successful Cal (Billy Crudup-Almost Famous, Charlotte Gray) had it all. He knew differently. A great job, a wife, a great kid. But something was missing. Seeking adventure, Cal hits the road in search of life, lust and lovin'. Armed with his Volvo station wagon and boyish charm, Cal seduces his way into the hearts and beds of the various women he meets in his travels. He does his best to stay out of trouble and succeeds...some of the time. That is until he meets Dulcie (Julianne Moore-Hannibal, Magnolia), a fiery redhead, ready to match Cal blow for blow and provide him with the wake-up call that could send him home. Featuring steamy performances from some of Hollywood's hottest actors, World Traveler will show you the wild, sexy side of the road on a trip you won't forget.

Following up on his acclaimed debut The Myth of Fingerprints, Bart Freundlich spins this drama that poses the question "what would it be like to run away from your life?" The film centers on a restless thirtysomething New Yorker named Cal (Billy Crudup) who one day drives off into the open road, leaving his wife and infant son behind. A series of flashbacks describe Cal's domestic malaise and disillusionment with his life. On the road, Cal encounters a number of unusual characters who are similarly tethered and drifting. One is named Dulcie (Julianne Moore), an emotionally fragile woman looking for her lost son. Through his interaction with Dulcie, Cal reflects on his own family and soon finds himself heading to his boyhood home where his father lives. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie GuideStill Searching - PopGun_Edwards
Wonderfully shot, and more than adequately acted, this film neglects little, with one important exception: an endearing storyline. Told partly in the present, partly through flashback, World Traveler is at times confusing, and there are lots of loose ends that remain untied. A great soundtrack (featuring much of Willie Nelson's Across the Borderline album) and wonderful cinematography save this film from being a complete washout. Cal's travels, all the people he meets, the lessons he learns about himself and the world around him, are all noteworthy, but in the end this film leaves the audience still searching.
