The Core
"Edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that's a total blast." -Shawn Edwards, FOX-TV
Academy Award winner Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry) leads an all-star cast in this electrifying journey that puts you in the middle of the most spectacular film adventure.
Geophysicist, Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart, Erin Brockovich) has made a terrifying discovery: the Earth's inner core has stopped rotating. Now the planet's electromagnetic field is deteriorating and within months, Earth will be destroyed.
One hop exists: to send Keyes and an elite team of scientists in a subterranean vessel to the center of the Earth. As mankind's fate hangs in the balance, the scientists and the ship's crew must do the unthinkable-detonate a nuclear device to reactivate the Earth's core.
co-starring Delroy Lindo (Ransom), Emmy Award winner Stanley Tucci and Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard.

A Mess! - revsdd
I saw the description of this movie's plot and thought that it sounded rather good. Then, I made a tragic mistake: I actually watched it! This movie is a mess from start to finish.
The plot is rather silly. A problem with the earth's outer core causes a breakdown in the electromagnetic field that basically means that we all have just a few months until we're fried by the sun's radiation. The movie never really explains what has caused this problem (except that it has something to do with a government experiment called "Destiny"). However, a rather unusual team of a young scientist (Aaron Echardt), his French friend (Tcheky Karyo), an arrogant older scientist who helped cause the problem in the first place (Stanley Tucci) an eccentric scientist/inventor (Delroy Lindo) and a hot-shot space shuttle pilot (Hilary Swank - I know, that piece of casting is worth a giggle) are called upon to save us all from destruction.
Frankly, this movie is boring. I mercifully passed out for about a half an hour and awoke to discover that it hadn't become any more interesting in the interim. It is an absolute waste of time to watch this, although not being a scientist, I didn't know that the earth's outer core of molten lead rotated. So, for that bit of knowledge gained, it gets credit. But it's still a mess.Yet another Doomsday movie. - cathyottawa
And this one is just soooooo ridiculous, I can imagine a conversation like this:
Director: "Ummm, you guys realize that this script makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, right?"
Producers: "Who cares. The audience is stupid. We're giving them amazing special effects, that's all they need.".
This film is the hats off award winner for most ridiculous, inaccurate use of science in a movie EVER. It's insultingly bad.
Now, this can work anyway in a dumb B movie, so bad it's good kind of way, but I didn't even get that kind of enjoyment out of this film. These cliche characters held no appeal. There's some tongue in cheek stuff here and there, but not enough to make this film enjoyable.
The final nail in the coffin was the "twist", in which we get the patronizing message that we've taken the earth for granted and abused Mother Nature yet again. The "give me a break" factor went on overdrive after that.
It was nice to see Aaron Eckhart take a break from his typical jerk character - it's just too bad it was in this stinker.
Bottom line, if you've seen Armageddon, Deep Impact, or The Day After Tomorrow, you've already seen a slightly better version of this film. Not bad at all! - mmason
I had heard that this film wasn't all that it was cracked up to be, and in fact, that it should be avoided if there were a few other movies to watch.
If you don't approach this from a scientist's perspective, this is a fabulous journey and an excellent story. I thoroughly enjoyed it... and recommend it.
