The Sum of All Fears
Based on the best-selling Tom Clancy novel...
Ben Affleck is ready for action, commanding the role of CIA agent Jack Ryan in this thrilling adventure based on the Tom Clancy bestseller.
America's Cold War fears are rekindled after the President of Russia dies and is succeeded by a man with a cryptic past. But East-West tensions erupt when the CIA suspects that renegade Russian scientists are developing more nuclear weapons. Mobilized into action by CIA director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman), Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) follows a danger-ridden trail to a shocking conclusion: terrorists plan to provoke a war between the U.S. and Russia- by detonating a nuclear weapon at a championship football game!
Co-starring James Cromwell and Liev Schreiber, The Sum of All Fears adds up to the year's most explosive entertainment.

This is another Tom Clancy great. Morgan Freeman does a very good job here unfortunatly Ben Affleck is no Harrison Ford and has a hard time filling those shoes. All in all a very good action movie. The story line is typical Clancy with an attention to detail that is border line obsessive. Action/drama buffs will love this filmA good thriller - Sports
A good thriller but not great. Affleck takes over the role made famous by Harrison Ford and does a good job and it is a shame there has been no further adaptations of the Tom Clancy books that he could of added his considerable talents. Anyone familiar withe Clancy will no the general twists and conspiracies from this 80's novel that have been updated to better relate to the current events of the time. The Blu-ray is good, not up to a dazzeling new release, but good all the same.A Pleasant Surprise. - cathyottawa
Hubby and I saw this in the theatre. We didn't know anything about it, and had no great expectations (it was a heat wave, and we were just looking to enjoy some AC for a few hours). We were very pleasantly surprised.
This is the fourth movie centered on CIA man Jack Ryan. Alec Baldwin played him in The Hunt for Red October, and Harrison Ford played him twice, in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. There was talk that Ford would play him again this time; though I don't know how that would have worked, since this takes place at the very beginning of Ryan's career.
Morgan Freeman is the CIA director that recruits Ryan. They have some fun scenes together, with the old dog teaching the young pup.
Affleck isn't half bad, and holds his own, but the script is really the star. This is a much smarter film than I've come to expect from this genre. The tension builds well, and it's pretty unpredictable - just when you think you know what's going to happen, the plot twists in a way you don't expect.
It still has it's over the top, Hollywood moments, but this is quite an enjoyable political thriller.
