I hate to be one of those people that say the original is always better, but I was expecting a lot more from this movie given the constraints of the day when the original was made. The entire movie feels very uneven and only finds its legs in the last half hour. My takeaway is that it is a fantasy movie that tries too hard to be a good fantasy movie.
I think my biggest problem with it is that the Eloi are presented as an indigenous people and a white man has to save them. The "going native" trope is really tired here.
The film really had a lot of potential and it was sad to see it so sorely wasted. Guy Addy is pretty meh as an actor and lacks the determined passion that possessed Rod Taylor in the original. He's not a very heroic hero at all!Great Action Adventure Flick - MattWeiler
This is a great action adventure flick.
Guy Pearce plays the role extremely well. The story is well written and really drags you into it.
The special effects are phenomenal, the acting is very believable, and the story is gripping.
This movie is very watchable and you should treat yourself.Impressive Departure to the Original Story - Sparky
When moviemakers decide to bring a book to the big screen there are two successful methods. Be absolutely true to the story or make a departure that honors the spirit of the book. The Time Machine does the latter and does it well. The acting is believable and the special effects are impressive. I loved the brief glimpse into the near future and wish the movie could have stayed there for a little longer. All in all a great movie for a Friday night.
