I have always meant to see this film and have finally sat down to watch. In short, this film is unsettling especially to those of us who live in the downtrodden rain ridden streets of a metropolis. It turned the genre on its head and is in my opinion Fincher's greatest contribution film. The serial killer thriller was never the same after this one. Rent it watch it, because this film is important and oddly entertaining.Seven - djfunkybob
This is arguably one of the best films of the 90’s and underrated for changing the face of the predictable, cookie-cutter Hollywood suspense thrillers that endured for decades before. Fincher’s direction required dedicated precision and he pulls off gasp after gasp with scenes such as Sloth, the Mills/Doe chase, and the tense “John Doe has the upper hand!” finale. He also captures the mood of a desperate, unwinding city on the verge of collapsing into a dreary purgatory until a demented, savant serial killer sheds light on the sins of its citizens. The script is admittedly dark and discouraging but the director embraces its essence. The flawless dialogue captures Somerset’s calculating demeanor and Mills’ eager temperament within each line. Freeman and Pitt combine the dialogue with their unique styles so well that their actions are as memorable years later as the words they speak. It pulls you in... - cathyottawa
...and doesn't let you go.
Right from the creepy openning credits, when we get our first brief glimpse of the serial killer, to the gloomy beginning, with the dark, dreary day, and the relentless pounding rain that permeates the film, this movie wraps you up in it's dark urban tale.
At the center of the film is Morgan Freeman's world weary detective, who is just a few days away from retirement. He is ready to leave. He's tired of the gloom. He deserves a little sunshine.
Brad Pitt is his young replacement. They are yin and yang to each other - Freeman researches the seven deadly sins in the library; Pitt pours over the crime scene photos. Freeman is studious and patient; Pitt is eager and impulsive. They balance each other.
Gwyneth Paltrow is well cast as Pitt's wife. They fell in love on this set, so their chemistry is nice. And Kevin Spacey's part is small, but pivotal. He's chillingly good.
Everything came together in this film - the casting is spot on, the dialogue is smart, the script is clever, the use of the dark photography was bold, and is like it's own character in the film, and finally, the effects for the crime scenes are chillingly realistic.
This is a movie people will still be talking about in 20 years.
