Where the three prequels managed to build up suspense in believable dystopian futures, this opts for cartoony, stilistic, gory and sometimes even juvenile action, and as a result never feels like a real part of the original universe. That said Jeunet manages to create some beautiful scenes, and if judged on it's own merit it's a pleasingly grotesque and surreal body-horror sci-fi.A return of a Classic - TheDuke
If only for the fact that there are clones of Rippley in this film, the most butt kicking action female of all time, who is part Alien herself. This movie is just a fun ride to save the earth from an Alien incursion on earth, brought on by the sheer arrogence of the corporation. Not Nearly as Good as the First Two But Better than the Third - Gregg
Some 200 years after her death (Alien 3) Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is resurrected through cloning, but its not just her that was resurrected which is the reason it was done in the first place. Not surprisingly for those familiar with the franchise, and despite all the precautions there are bound to be problems.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s effort is not as atmospheric (claustrophobic) as Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, not as action packed as James Cameron’s “Aliens” and not as introspective as David Fincher’s “Alien 3” but probably 2nd in each of those categories, which helps to make this a satisfying if not altogether original film. The film comes across as a little disjointed in its feel which may be the result of the struggles between a massive Hollywood studio and a French art film director, there are some amusing quirky scenes interspersed with scenes of all out action which is unusual. The screenwriter Joss Whedon was according to an interview very unhappy with the film, while there were some changes his biggest problem was with interpretation of his script, so perhaps the problems lie with differing visions of the participants.
The performances are consistent and strong, though none really standout. The cast in addition to Sigourney Weaver includes Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dominique Pinon and Brad Dourif. For the time it was made the special effects are flawless.
For those unfamiliar with the works of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet beyond the incredible ‘Amelie’ I would highly recommend his first film ‘Delicatessen’ and also recommend ‘The City of Lost Children’. All his films share fantastic stylistic elements include a great use of color. Both Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon had worked on previous films for Jeunet and represent another element of his films which is his use of unusual or distinctive faces which is furthered by his inclusion of Brad Dourif.
