A juicy, funny, romantic comedy - aimed at adults! - moviemonger
Shakespeare in Love is one of the rare romantic comedies that I actually enjoyed. The movie is a portrayal of how William Shakespeare, as a young and struggling poet and playwright in London, comes up with his famous play Romeo and Juliet while in the midst of a love affair (and suffering from writer's block). The performances are all excellent, particularly those by Fiennes and Paltrow. Judi Dench is notably amusing as the bitingly sarcastic Queen Elizabeth. The use of Shakespearean dialogue, both in normal conversation and in the play being rehearsed, is done quite well and doesn't seem forced at all. The chemistry between Fiennes and Paltrow is convincing. The script is incredibly witty, laced with references to Shakespeare's works, peppered with half-truths, and with tongue-in-cheek references about how theatre four hundred years ago relates to the entertainment industry today. The argument that Shakespeare couldn't have written a play like Romeo and Juliet without being in touch with his emotional side and experiencing similar events in life at that point deserves some consideration.A knock-out performance - Elle0Angel
Paltrow might have overplayed the 'I'm not worthy/Daddy's little girl' card in her acceptance speech, but she absolutely deserved the Oscar for her performance in this film as Viola, the wealthy daughter of an Elizabethan merchant who longs for the stage and England's most famous playwright in equal measure. Paltrow's gender-bending role required her to play Romeo, Juliet, and Thomas Kent (Viola's male stage persona). Strong performances from Joseph Fiennes, Judy Dench, Geoffrey Rush and Ben Affleck ("Suffering Cats!") round out a powerhouse film about the nature of love and longing that will have you laughing and dabbing your eyes by turns.
Watch for the ending, which deftly succeeds in giving everyone what they want in the worst possible way -- a pleasant change in the world of utterly happy Hollywood endings. One of my favourites - Greensleeves
This show has it all. Comedy, drama, and action. Well paced and completely engaging. The characters are likable and believable, in an escapist way. Shakespeare's works are not easy for the average Joe to get into but this is a nice way of putting a human face on the man, his works, and that moment in history. Wouldn't it be fun if his life had included a little of this great adventure?
