The captivating story of three women from different eras whose lives are transformed by the timeless power of a masterful novel.

Great acting but very very slow - Jujubes
The story itself is very interesting and the acting is really good - you got 3 excellent actresses here honing in their art - but the movie is really slow. It's the kind that you would enjoy EVEN more if you have read VW's novels.
The characters are all miserable people by the way, and if you know anything about VW you won't expect anything less. But the melancholy of it all really does leave you feeling quite blue. It's not a sentimental piece (nor is it a tearjerker) but I think it's a good movie to showcase Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore's acting.
Not something I would go and scream "Watch This" to people I know but at the same time, I felt the greatness in the acting and the artful direction.Boring. - TheAlmighty
Maybe it's a guy thing, but I don't understand how people can like this movie. The plot is minimal, the acting, while nuanced, is very understated (read DRY). Not for one minute did I actually engage with the film or "lose myself" in its wonders.
Also, the scenes with Julianne Moore and her son were ridiculously painful. None of the kid's lines seemed the slightest bit natural - not a jab at the kid's acting skills, more of a fault in the screenplay.
Anyway, this is definitely not all that it was cracked up to be.Just okay - Dee84
I thought this movie was a bit boring. I actually chose it because there were so many high profile actors in it. I was a little disappointed. I would have liked to have seen a little more on Meryl Streep's character's relationship with man that was dying (another high profile actor, but I can't recall his name right now). I think there could have been more of a story there.
