"O" (Special Edition)
Trust. Seduction. Betrayal.
Hot young stars, a hip, driving soundtrack, plus a provocative tale of jealousy and betrayal combine to create this controversial modern-day version of Shakespeare's classic, "Othello." O is Odin James (Mekhi Phifer), the school's star basketball player and future NBA hopeful. Even though he's the only black student at the elite Palmetto Grove Academy, he has the adoration of all, including the team's coach (Martin Sheen) and the Dean's beautiful daughter, Desi (Julia Stiles). Odin's troubled friend Hugo (Josh Hartnett), the coach's son, is deeply resentful of his father's preference of Odin on and off the court. When Hugo plots a diabolical scheme to sow the seed of mistrust between O and Desi, it sets in motion a disturbing chain of events which erupts into a firestorm of breathtaking intensity. "O" is a stunning tale that will stay with you long after its final, powerful frame.

My fiance loved this movie and thought it was one of the best movies that he had seen in awhile so I know that my opinion was in the minority. I thought it was well done, Julia Styles is a good actor and it was fun to see Dr. Pratt from ER play such a good roll as well, he did a great job in such a deep role. Seriously sad, but good. Josh Hartnet was my favourite, did he ever do a great job manipulating the rest of his friends.Hard to Stay Interested.... - anwallette
This movie while trying to bring Shakespeare into a more "today's generation" way, actually failed in its attempt.
The actors were really stiff and not at all believable. It was painful to try to watch them without any chemistry tell a script that didn't really cover what Othello was about.
Don't waste your time....I'm glad that I wasn't looking all that forward to it.Appeals to the masses - JTown
Where as this version of Othello didn't seem to catapult its way into one of the classics, just seems to be another recent addition to the 90's and early 2000s movies that pull from Shakespeare stories. I personally think the movie would have been a lot better put together if they had cast someone instead of Julia Stiles for that role, she never seems to give enough energy for dramatic roles. However I think pretty much everyone else is well portrayed and follows in the footsteps of the newest modern Hamlet movie starring Ethan Hawk. Romeo and Juliet was certainly not a gem and when they do these movies I think its frustrating to watch them use the language of William in a modern scenario. Preview it for sure, but see if there's something better before renting.
