This movie is fantastic. Right mix of childish and adult humour. Jack Black is very entertaining. He does an amazing job! The kids are very talented and also did a great job. Great for good music and lots of laugh!! .you're not hardcore, unless you live hardcore - clauditorium
Desperate for cash, Jack Black takes a substitute teaching job destined for his roommate. When he discovers his students' musical talents he enlists them to help him win a Battle of the Bands. The students learn to loosen up, Black learns to be less selfish, etc. The filmmakers take this afterschool-special plot and craft something warm, heartfelt, and funny out of it, thanks in large part to some of the most genuine child actors I've seen (director Richard Linklater deserves a lot of the credit for that). A lot of movies make me laugh, but this one made me smile a lot. If you're going to watch it, you first have to throw your cynicism out the window. (In my case, the best thing to do was to watch it alone, because my friends are all experts in sarcasm.)School of Rock .... Rocks! - TheShamus
The premise of, "School of Rock" is pretty basic. Some "straight-laced" kids who are in a private school and play classical music are encouraged to not take themselves so seriously -- and learn about "Classic Rock" -- and to study it just like they study other subjects.
Enter Jack Black, an aging rock wanna-be who pretends to be a "substitute teacher" and turns the Private school's music program on it's ears.
This movie works because of the dynamic between himself and the kids. This movie is fiction -- it is not meant to reflect reality. Black's comedy and music stylings are highlighted in this movie (a movie which was likely written with Black's talents in mind).
The kids were just cast for the movie, and are not well known from other roles.
From the other reviews, I can see this is not everyone's cup of tea -- but I bought the movie, and everyone I have watched it with found it very enjoyable. If you don't like, "Classic Rock", you may not be able to identify with Jack Black's character.
Where I grew up in Kitchener (Ontario), many people in my generation were in a band, watched bands, or thought about being in a band. I think these are the people who identify the most.
